When Do Hurricanes and Tornadoes Occur?

Hurricane season starts around the first of June but peaks in August and September.

Thunderstorms can occur throughout the year but are more likely in the spring and summer and in the afternoon or evening.

What is the Difference Between a Storm Watch or Warning?

A storm watch means that a storm is possible, and a storm warning means that a storm is expected. Listen to your local news media for updates on weather conditions and the rate of change.

  • Be mindful that the coronavirus is still spreading. Add hand sanitizer, Lysol, and masks to your disaster kits.
  • Ensure that you have enough food and water to survive for several days.
  • Fill all prescriptions ahead of time.
  • Charge phones, tables, laptops ahead of time (get portable chargers if possible).
  • Keep extra batteries, flashlight, and candles available.
  • Have puzzles, coloring books, and books handy to keep the children busy if the electricity goes out.
  • Have a safe place to go (for example, the bathtub or your innermost room with no windows).
  • Have a detailed family plan and practice what to do regularly.
  • If you have pets, make a plan for them as well.
  • Place important documents in plastic bags to prevent water damage.
  • If evacuation is needed, follow FEMA and disaster relief guidelines.
  • Help elderly or disabled neighbors. Use masks and eye coverings as needed.
  • Make sure your fire extinguisher is working properly.
  • Fill the gas tank in your car in case of evacuation.
  • If you have to stay at a shelter, continue to practice social distancing guidelines.
