Your Kids’ Dental Health Can Impact Their Overall Health

Hospitality Health ER is an emergency room, but we believe in promoting health from a holistic standpoint. This includes encouraging good oral care from an early age. For National Children’s Dental Month, we’ll look at why dental care is so important to your child’s overall health. Many people fear going to the dentist, but good habits start at a young age: your child will benefit from regular dental visits starting from the early age of 1.

How Good Dental Health Can Alleviate Medical Problems

#1  Infections from Gum Disease or Cavities Can Be Painful

The most obvious reason to take care of your children’s dental care is to prevent gum disease and cavities. Pain is the biggest complaint when it comes to oral health, so proper care and dental visits can prevent cavities or an infection. And yes, cavities can spread. Tooth decay in preschool-age children has become an epidemic in the U.S., so it’s important to get your kids in to the dentist early.

#2 Poor Dental Health is a Risk Factor for Heart Disease and Strokes

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggests gum disease is a risk factor for coronary artery disease and disease of the blood vessels and arteries that supply the brain. Strokes were more common in those who suffered from oral complications such as gum disease and missing teeth.

#3 Poor Oral Health and Your Immune System

Evidence also suggests that bacteria entering through the mouth can enter the bloodstream and activate the immune system. When this happens, artery walls become inflamed and narrowed. Although a direct correlation hasn’t been established, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

#4 Dental Visits Can Help Identify Diseases

The mouth is a gateway to identifying other diseases. Studies have correlated periodontal disease with coronary artery disease. Also, certain types of oral diseases provide insight into a person’s overall health.

Dentists recommend an examination and cleaning of teeth annually. For those with gum disease, two cleanings a year may be required. Brushing two to three times a day is critical. Flossing is also key, because it removes debris and disrupts the bacteria population that congregates between the teeth and leads to periodontal disease.
