Hospitality Health ER in Galveston Shines a Spotlight on Scholarship Winners
Myrioh Kitson: “I didn’t have many mentors growing up, so I want to be one for other kids.”
Myrioh Kitson is paying her own way through college by working three jobs, including her grandma’s restaurant, Denny’s, and a children’s recreation center. Myrioh loves working with children, and her dream is to become a teacher one day. Even when she’s not at work at the rec center, you’ll find her playing basketball with kids in the community. Because Myrioh lost her financial aid assistance, she continues to work hard during her breaks to save up to pay for college.
Destiny Martin: Loyola University, New Orleans “I’ve never allowed challenges, monetary challenges especially, to defeat me.”
Destiny is a Computer Information Systems major with a minor in Entrepreneurship. Her dream is to work for a big tech company like Google, Apple, or Microsoft. Being one of nine children in her family, she didn’t have a lot of extra spending money in college, so she saved up to take a course in lash extensions. After completing the course, she started offering lash extension services to students right in her dorm room, which has become a successful venture. Destiny also goes above and beyond for her community by volunteering for Catholic Charities as an Administrative Assistant.
Nathan Eckert: UT Austin “I almost gave up but then I found the right support systems.”
Nathan is working on his Biology BSA with a minor in English. His goal is to become a Physician’s Assistant. He spends his free time cooking, drawing, and playing instruments like the ukulele and guitar. Nathan’s medical condition made it challenging for him to transition from high school to college. He said he nearly gave up, but he continued to look for solutions and ultimately found the right support systems to enable him to thrive his sophomore year.
