April showers bring May flowers, then hopefully a decrease in the spread of the coronavirus. As we look forward to things getting back to normal, we must all remember that managing our overall health is still important, including getting enough protein and vitamins. Lucky for us, May has many fruits and veggies in season.
What Fruits and Vegetables are in Season in May?
Some fruits and vegetables grow year-round, but some grow better when the weather is warmer. In May, you are more likely to see an increase in greens, such as lettuce, spinach, and arugula, and other veggies like asparagus. These vegetables should be eaten regularly because they are a great source of vitamins and fiber. Fruits like pineapples, mangoes, strawberries, cherries, and apricots are also in season in the month of May.
What Fruits and Vegetables are Good for Boosting My Immune System?
While all fruits and vegetables are good sources of nutrients, the following list includes ones extra packed with vitamins and minerals, which means they have an even greater impact on the immune system:
- Broccoli
- Garlic
- Bell peppers (red)
- Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, limes, lemons)
- Spinach
- Papaya
- Kiwi
- And more
Having a healthy immune system has always been important, but with the spread of the coronavirus, it’s even more important for everyone to eat the right foods. Taking vitamins and supplements can help, but the best way to get needed vitamins, fiber, and minerals is through fresh fruits and vegetables. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes or acid reflux, always consult with your doctor about which fruits and vegetables are best for you to consume.
