The month of October shines light on many different health conditions: breast cancer, Down syndrome, SIDS, and the importance of healthy lungs. Although all are worthy of awareness, lung health is especially important this year as we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has continually warned that the coronavirus is a respiratory disease that can be deadly. Fortunately, most people only experience mild symptoms if they are in good health and with no prior health conditions. Having healthy lungs can play a major role in a person’s overall health, with or without the coronavirus pandemic. Asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are all lung issues that can affect one’s quality of life. Since the lungs bring fresh air into the body and remove waste, having healthy lungs can help prevent other health conditions.Â
What Can I Do to Keep My Lungs Healthy?
- Reduce smoking or quit completely.
- Avoid secondhand smoke.
- Avoid indoor pollutants.
- Be aware of air quality or outdoor pollutants.
- Exercise.
With flu season and coronavirus upon us, there are some additional precautions you should take to protect your lungs:Â
- Get a flu vaccine.
- Stay away from others who are sick or who haven’t been following social distancing precautions.
- Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer regularly.
- Keep away from crowds. Wear a mask around others.
- Brush your teeth twice each day and floss. This helps prevent bacteria in the mouth.
- Eat foods that support lung health.
For those with strong healthy lungs, October is a month to remember not to take that for granted. For others, respiratory issues are a part of their daily lives, and they have to work extra hard to stay safe. For all of us, this means creating good habits, choosing healthy environments, and making good choices during the pandemic and flu season.
