In Honor of International Women’s Day, We’re Celebrating Jeanne and Jill Shipp

Although the Hospitality Health ER team celebrates masterminds Jill and Jeanne everyday, with International Women’s Day on March 8th, we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a few of their successes and triumphs over the years with HHER.

Jeanne Shipp is the Co-Founder/Administrator and Jill Shipp is the Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO) of Hospitality Health ER. At its heart, HHER is a family business, owned and operated by the Shipp family.

“When I learned Hospitality Health ER was co-founded and run by strong, smart women, I was very excited to work here” – Starla Bickerstaff

“When I learned Hospitality Health ER was co-founded and run by strong, smart women, I was very excited to work here. Jill and Jeanne’s determination for excellence in medical care and leadership has been an inspiration. Their focus on the patient is astounding and unlike any I’ve experienced in the medical field,” said Starla Bickerstaff, Marketing Director at HHER Tyler.

“During this pandemic, Jill and Jeanne have shown what true leadership is. I admire them tremendously” – Kelli Burton

“As a fellow nurse, I’m honored to work for women who will work beside you when help is needed. During this pandemic, Jill and Jeanne have shown what true leadership is. I admire them tremendously. Not only do they care for the patients we see each day, but also each and every staff member at HHER. I’m blessed to know them and be a part of the amazing company they run,” said Kelli Burton, Marketing Director at HHER Longview.

Jeanne and Jill are a mother-daughter duo and the powerhouse behind three patient-focused medical care facilities in Texas: Hospitality Health ER Longview, Galveston, and Tyler. Below are Jill and Jeanne’s reflections on building a family-owned-and-operated freestanding ER.

Hospitality Health ER started as a dream in my mom’s (Jeanne) living room. We would put the business plan together at night, from policies and procedures to the business logistics. Our only goal was to have a small ER that took care of patients in the way we would want our family to be treated.

I made the logo and helped come up with the name. From an idea in our living room to purchasing the land, it all felt like a labor of love because we saw it come together each step of the way.

“My mom was a mother of 4 long before she was a CEO. Her wisdom and approach from a mother’s mind creates a unique culture compared to other ERs.”

We started with one location, a handful of doctors and nurses, and radiology. HHER started in our hometown, so at the beginning a lot of our patients were our actual friends, family, and acquaintances. And as we started to grow, we kept that mentality with us—we understood the importance of treating everyone like our own.

We looked at freestanding ERs as an opportunity to bring patients into the ER and offer great one-on-one care, spend time with them, and treat them like family. Two minutes to us feels like two minutes, but if you’re sick, those two minutes can feel like twenty minutes. It’s important to remind yourself of that and to be empathetic to patients, which is why we put them first and provide efficient quality care. My mom was a mother of 4 long before she was a CEO. Her wisdom and approach from a mother’s mind creates a unique culture compared to other ERs.

Our goal is to decrease the chaos that the emergency has created and get our patients back to their routine and to their lives as quickly and efficiently as possible—without ever feeling rushed though. We’re mindful of the fact that everyone has such full lives and when you get sick or hurt, the last thing you want to do is sit and wait. We treat patients with a level of care that we would with our own loved ones.

We make decisions purely based on patient needs. Leading with instincts along with training helps us set ourselves apart from other emergency facilities. Knowing that we have an incredible team standing with us gives us strength to remain calm. They walk through fire with us. They are passionate, capable and prepared.

At HHER, we provide the unexpected. Patients expect to have a great ER physician, a great nurse, and they expect that the radiology tech knows how to shoot an x-ray, but what they don’t expect is a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Hospitality encompasses everything that we want the patient to know and feel. Because we are family and we want our patients to feel that, when you walk in the lobby there’s a big fireplace. It feels like home.

“Hospitality encompasses everything that we want the patient to know and feel.”

Today we have multiple locations and hundreds of staff. And we are all still working towards the same goal.
