Most Common ER Visits in the Summertime

Most Common ER Visits

Most Common ER VisitsSummertime is usually a child’s favorite time of the year. School is out, the days are longer, pools are open, kids are active, and, well, lots can happen. Perhaps it’s no surprise that ER visits spike in the summertime and that children are more likely to have accidents that require medical attention. Here’s a look at some of the most common ER visits in the summertime.

What are the Most Common Reasons Children Go to the Emergency Room?

Some of the most common reasons children are brought to the ER during the summertime are:

  1. Injuries from falls, cuts, and other accidents in the home
  2. Bicycle falls/accidents
  3. Allergies (seasonal asthma, bee stings etc.)
  4. Water-related injuries and drowning
  5. Hoverboard, scooter, and skateboard accidents

Since children are spending more time at home during the summertime, they are more likely to become injured doing something in the home. And although we’re big on promoting outdoor activity, riding bikes or skateboards increases the chance of kids falling off and spraining, fracturing, or breaking a bone.

How to Keep Your Kids Safe During the Summer

Teaching your kid to be street-wise is important. Wearing a helmet is critical to protect a child’s head while riding a bike or other wheeled toy, but even wearing your helmet doesn’t protect arms and legs from being injured. Accidents do happen, so parents and families must talk with their children about the dangers of some of their regular activities and ways they can prevent any avoidable injuries or accidents.

Of course parents want their children to have fun and meaningful summers, so it is important for parents and caregivers to discuss safety in everyday activities and create a contingency plan in case something happens.
